Shelly Bennett is a nine year veteran with the Grand Island Police Department and worked as a corrections officer prior to being hired on here. A few weeks ago she was still assigned to the drug enforcement unit working cases when she noticed some health issues and made an appointment to see a doctor. She was diagnosed with a brain tumor about the size of a golf ball and within days had her first surgery as her health began to decline very rapidly. She came out of the first surgery in good spirits but with partial paralysis due to brain swelling and other issues. The road to full recovery will be very long to say the least. Shelly is scheduled to have a second surgery tomorrow (May 2nd) and additional surgeries will likely be required. It is entirely possible that Shelly could be hospitalized for the remainder of the calendar year as she is treated and works hard to recover. Shelly has always been a positive role model and extremely energetic, hard working person. She is always one of the first to volunteer for any type of fund raising effort, especially Special Olympics, and pushes others to be better officers and people through her examples. Shelly’s family is updating her Facebook page fairly regularly and I know Shelly would appreciate hearing well wishes from her brothers and sisters. Family and friends are doing a number of things to raise funds. There is a sand volleyball tournament scheduled for June which is linked to her Facebook page. A benefit fund account has also been established for outside donations. The account is listed as the Michelle Bennett Benefit Fund, Home Federal Bank 221 S. Locust Street Grand Island, NE 68801. FOP #24 will likely be doing some additional fundraising in coming weeks and months. But for now please be sure to keep her in your thoughts and prayers. She needs support more than anything.
